ABB expands its leadership in next-generation AI-enabled mobile robotics with the acquisition of Sevensense – Video

ABB has announced the acquisition of Sevensense, a global leader in vision and AI navigation technology, in a move to expand its leadership in next-generation AI-enabled mobile robotics. This acquisition follows ABB’s investment in Sevensense after winning the ABB Robotics Innovation Challenge in 2021. With this acquisition, ABB aims to add eyes and intelligence to its autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) through 3D vision and AI, significantly increasing the density of information used for mapping and navigation.

This combination of technologies will allow the robots to differentiate between fixed objects and people or vehicles, offering a high level of speed, accuracy, and load capacity. Furthermore, this technology will enable the AMRs to interact with workers without the need for closed spaces, making them well-suited for dynamic logistics environments and factories.

Sevensense’s technology integrates AI and 3D vision, enabling AMRs to make intelligent decisions and constantly update and share area maps across a fleet for instant scalability without stopping production. This acquisition will further solidify ABB’s position as a global leader in autonomous mobile robotics and bring cutting-edge technology to a wider range of markets and sectors.

Author Video Description

We’re expanding our leadership in next-generation AI-enabled mobile robots with our acquisition of Swiss start-up @Sevensense, a leader in AI-based navigation technology for AMRs (autonomous mobile robots).

Sevensense’s pioneering technology combines AI and 3D vision enabling AMRs to make intelligent decisions through the creation, constant update and sharing of area maps across an AMR fleet for instant scalability without stopping production. This reduces commissioning time, from weeks to days and allows mobile robots to adapt to dynamic, highly-complex environments, and identify fixed and mobile objects and people.

This technology is already transforming linear production lines into dynamic networks with greater efficiency, flexibility and accuracy in manufacturing and intralogistics.
