CAUSED THEIR ERRORS. DID THOSE MISTAKES OR THOSE DESIGN DEFICIENCIES, ARE THEY IN OUR LANDER. WE APPRECIATE EVERYONE THAT TRIED TO GO BEFORE. WE BRING THINGS TOGETHER QUICKLY. THE EARLY STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT STAGING AND TEST OFTEN. TEST, TEST, TEST. THAT’S THE KEY TO SUCCESS WHICH IS WHAT I THINK WE DID.

THIS WILL SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN AS IT ENTERS INTO THE EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE. WE NEED TO SLOW DUNE THE VEHICLE TO REDUCE REENTRY

FORCES. AGAIN, WHAT YOU SEE ON THE SCREEN IS A VIEW OF THE ENGINE ON SECOND STAGE. YOU CAN FOLLOW THE SPEED AND ALTITUDE OF BOTH VEHICLES ON THE BOTTOM LEFT HAND OF THE SCREEN. TELEMETRY. THE ENGINING ARE REIGNITED. >> THERE YOU CAN SEE THE ENTRY BURN HAS BEGUN WITH THE ENGINES RELIT.

>> STAGE ONE. >> VERY QUICK ENTRY BURN THERE. GREAT CALL-OUTS AND ON NOMINAL TRAJECTORIES. THE SECOND OF THREE REQUIRED FOR THIS BOOSTER TO RETURN BACK DOWN TO LAND. THE NEXT AND FINAL BURN IS THE FINAL BURN. THAT’S THE CENTRAL ENGINE BURN SLOWING THE VEHICLE DOWN IN TIME FOR LANDING.

IT’S COMING UP IN 15 SECONDS OR SO. >> THERE YOU CAN SEE ON THE LEFT HAND OF THE SCREEN. THE LANDING BURN HAS BEGUN. WATCH FALCON NINE TOUCHDOWN FOR LANDING. >> A GREAT VIEW THERE. THAT IS — >> WE JUST HAD CONFIRMATION. JUST HEARD A CONFIRMATION OF GOOD ORBIT FOR OUR FALCON

NINE SECOND STAGE CARRYING OUR IM1 PAYLOAD. WITH THE LANDING THAT MARKS SPACE Xs 273 OF AN ORBITAL ROCKET INCLUDING FIRST STAGE FOR FALCON NINE AND FALCON HEAVY. WITH CONFIRMATION OF GOOD ORBIT, THE MISSION ISN’T OVER YET. WE DO HAVE THE SECOND BURN IN THE ENGINE ONBOARD THE SECOND STAGE AROUND

THE T PLUS 41 MINUTE MARK FOLLOWED BY SPACECRAFT SEPARATION. UNTIL THEN WE’LL SEND IT OVER TO MEGAN AT KSC. >> THANK YOU, MEGAN. WELCOME TO THE SPACE COAST OF FLORIDA WHERE WE WITNESSED LIVE THE LIFTOFF OF THE MOON BOUND SPACECRAFT AND NOVA C LANDER. WE SEE A LOT OF LAUNCHES HERE FROM KENNEDY.

REALLY TRULY NEVER GETS OLD. THE LAUNCH ON TENDERNESS TO PALPATION OF THE SPACE X FALCON NINE ROCKET AT KENNEDY SPACE CENTER. INTUITIVE MACHINES AND AMERICAN COMPANY BASED IN HOUSTON TEXAS DEVELOPED AND BUILT THE LANDER CARRYING SIX NASA PAYLOADS. IF EVERYTHING GOES AS PLANNED THE NOVA C LANDER WILL LAND ON THE SHADOWY SOUTH

SIDE OF THE MOON. STAY WITH US, OUR BROADCAST ON NASA TV WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE AQUISITION OF SIGNAL EXPECTED TO HAPPEN AROUND 1:55 A.M. EASTERN TIME. BEFORE LAUNCH WE HIGHLIGHTED THREE OF SIX NASA PAYLOADS ONBOARD THE NOVA C LANDER. THE FOURTH IS THE SCOUT PAYLOAD STANDING FOR STEREO, CAMERAS FOR LUNAR PLUME STUDIES.

FOUR CAMERAS AT THE BASE OF THE LANDER. THE IMAGES WILL HELP SCIENTIST UNDERSTAND HOW THEY IMPACT THE LUNAR SURFACE FOR THIS MISSION AND FUTURE ONES. >> SCALPS IS ARRAY OF SMALL CAMERAS DURING THE DECENT OF THE VEHICLE. USING STEREOPHOTO IMAGES. THE HOT ENGINE PLUMES WILL INTERACT WITH THE SURFACE. THEY ACQUIRE IT FROM

THE INTERACTION UNTIL AFTER THE VEHICLE LANDED ON THE SURFACE. THE SCALP CAMERAS WILL BE LOOKING AT THE OVERALL FORMATION AND EROSION OF THE ROCKET PLUMES. THE FINAL STEREOIMAGES STORED ON A SMALL ONBOARD STORAGE UNIT TRANSFERRED TO THE LANDER. WE CAN USE THEM TO RECONSTRUCT THE OVERALL EROSION VOLUME AND SHAPE OF THE GROUND.

WITH THE ART MIST PROGRAM WE ESTABLISH A SUSTAINED LUNAR EXPLORATION AND MULTIPLE PAYLOADS IN CLOSE PROXIMITY. IT’S A CRITICAL PART OF PHENOMENON AND MODELS TO INFORM THE LANDINGS. >> LET’S HEAD BACK TO HOUSTON WHERE JOSH IS STANDING BY LIVE WITH AN UPDATE AND I’M SURE VERY EXCITED. >> THANKS MEGAN. WITH EACH PASSING

MINUTE WE ARE CLOSER TO RECEIVING THE LANDERS DATA. WE ARE STANDING BY FOR LAUNCH VEHICLE SEPARATION. THEY MAKE FIRST COMMUNICATION FOR CRITICAL HEALTH AND FLIGHT DATA INTO CONTROL. WE WANTED TO MAKE IT AND EXPERIENCED A FEW TYPES OF INFORMATION THEY ARE LOOKING AT DURING THE MISSION. THIS PARTICULAR SCREEN IS THE

DEORBIT AND DECENT OR DDL SCREEN. IT’S USED BY THE MISSION DIRECTOR AND LANDING SYSTEM EXPERTS. USED PRIMARY WHILE NOVA C ORBITZ THE MOON. THE IMAGES ARE CALLED THE LUNAR TACTICAL VIEW. THE LANDER IS ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE MOON AND GREEN IS ON THE NEAR SIDE. THE LINE IS THE TAIL

WHERE NOVA C IS. THE ACCELERATION PORTION OF THE SCREEN SHOWS RAW ACCELERATION VALUES FROM THE INITIAL MEASUREMENT UNIT. USED DURING BURN MANEUVERERS AND ROBUST WAY OF USING A EXCELRATION OVERTIME FOR SOME REASON LIKE CONTROLLERS LOST DATA. FINALLY, THE COLUMN IS A RECEIVED ACCEPTED, EDITED AND PRECHECK. WHEN EACH OF THE

LINES ARE ON TOP OF EACH OTHER THIS IS A GOOD INDICATION THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM IS IN GOOD HEALTH. EVERY MEASURE IT MAKES MUST BE RECEIVED, ACCEPTED, OR EDITED. IT’S THE OUTLIER OF DATA THE COMPUTER KNOWS IS BAD INFORMATION. COLLECTIVELY, THE DDL SCREEN IS ONE OF MANY TO NAVIGATE NOVA C TO THE SURFACE.

IT’S NO SMALL FITE AND THE EFFORTS OF OUR TEAM HAS BROUGHT US TO THIS MOMENT STANDING BY FOR LAUNCH VEHICLE SEPARATION AND AQUISITION OF SIGNAL FOR 40 MINUTES. UNTIL THEN, WE WILL TOSS BACK TO MEGAN WITH MORE ON THE CHALLENGES FOR THE IM1 MISSION. >> BEING HONEST ABOUT IT. WE KNOW HOW

DIFFICULT IT IS TO GET TO THE MOON. WE HAVEN’T DONE IT IN MORE THAT 50 YEARS. NASA AND AMERICAN COMPANIES HAVE TEAMED UP AND KNOW A LOT OF RESEARCH NEEDS TO HAPPEN BEFORE LEADING BACK TO THE SURFACE. THE REWARDS OUTWEIGHT THE RISKS. >> LANDING ON THE MOON IS HARD. UNDER THE PROGRAM WE

WILL SEND HUMANS TO THE MOON FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE APOLLO. AHEED OF HUMANS, WE WANT TO GET UP AS MUCH SCIENCE EXPLORATION AND TECHNOLOGY EXPERIMENTS AS POSSIBLE. >> THEY START FACILITATING THE EARLY SCIENCE. THE THINGS WE WANT TO UNDERSTAND. CLIPS STANDS FOR COMMERCIAL LUNAR PAYLOAD SERVICES CLPS. >> WHEN NASA

DELIVERS THE PAID LPAYLOADTHAT DO IT WITH A PARTNER. >> IT’S A DELIVERY SERVICE. AKIN TO A DELIVERY SERVICE HERE ON EARTH. >> NASA WILL PROVIDE PAYLOADS TO A COMMERCIAL COMPANY AND DECIDE HOW TO GET TO THE MOON. THEY HAVE TO MANAGE THE END AND MISSION. >> IT’S MEANT TO PROVIDE AFFORDABLE RAPID FREQUENT

ACCESS TO THE LUNAR SURFACE THROUGH AMERICAN COMPANIES. >> WE ARE FUNDING DIFFERENT COMPANIES. >> THEY ARE COMPETING TO WIN TASK ORDERS TO DELIVER PAYLOADS TO THE SURFACE OF THE MOON. >> WE MUST HELP ESTABLISH A LUNAR ECONOMY. >> THEY BECOME AVAILABLE THEN THEY ARE ABLE TO MAKE IT MORE AFFORDABLE.

THE LUNAR SURFACE IS THE NEXT FRONTIER FOR THE COMMERCIAL ENVIRONMENT. >> WE HAD TO ACKNOWLEDGE UP-FRONT THAT SOME OF THEM WILL FAIL. THESE MISSIONS MIGHT NOT BE AS SUCCESSFUL. >> WHICH HAVE ACCEPTED THE RISK THAT GOING THROUGH THE INNOVATIVE APPROACH WITH THE COMMERCIAL COMPANIES THERE COULD BE SOME FAILURES. SOME ARE NEW COMPANIES.

NONE OF THEM HAVE EVER SUCCESSFULLY LANDED ON THE SURFACE OF THE MOON. >> SO, THAT WILL HELP ULTIMATELY RISK AND COMPANIES LEARNED WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD-UP THE LUNAR LANDING. GET TO AND LAND SAFELY. >> THEY HAVE VERY, VERY, GOOD TECHNICAL DEPTH AND ABILITY TODY SIGN AND EXECUTE MISSIONS.

WE ARE HERE TO TAKE MORE SHOTS ON GOAL. BIG PICTURE, IF WE FLY MISSIONS AT ONE-TENTHS OF THE COST OF A NASA MISSION WE GET EIGHT. >> WITH ONE OR TWO OR THREE FAILURES. THIS IS A VERY ECONOMIC CAL PROPOSITION. THIS IS MORE RISK TOLERANT THAN NASA IS ACCUSTOM TOO.

THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO BET THEIR MISSION ON IT AND DO WHAT THEY CAN. THE IMPORTANT THING TO REALIZE RISK TOLERANT AND THE REWARD TO GET PAYLOADS TO THE MOON INEXPENSIVELY AND RAPIDLY. >> WE WANT SCIENCE. WE PUT MORE RESOURCES ON MORE SCIENCE EXPLORATION AND TECH NOL DIDN’T I PAYLOADS AND RETURN ON

INVESTMENT. >> PROVIDING TREMENDOUS BENEFIT. >> IT WAS A LOT WE’D LIKE TO LEARN AND PREPARE MISSIONS TO MARS. >> THE MOON IS THE FIRST STEP. >> FLYING ON COMMERCIAL MISSIONS MEANS COST SAVINGS FOR NASA. THIS IS THE DEPUTY ASSOCIATE ADMINISTRATOR FOR NATNASA SCIENCE DIRECTOR. WE WHERE YOU SAY SAW A LAUNCH.

>> A BEAUTIFUL LAUNCH. IT’S FANTASTIC. >> PERFECT. HOW DOES NASA MAINTAIN OVERSIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO THE CLIPS VENDORS. >> NASA IS NOT DOING THESE MISSIONS. WE FIND PASSAGE ON COMMERCIAL COMPANIES. WE ESTABLISHED THIS GROUP OF PRECERTIFIED 14 U.S. COMPANIES WE CAN GO TO AND HAVE THEM BID FOR A SPECIFIC MISSION.

LAND AT A CERTAIN PLACE OF THE MOON AND BRING CARGO AND EXPERIENCE. WE ASSIGN THEM IN NASA ENGINEER. THEY REPRESENT ALL OF THE NATIONAL NASA CARGO.WE GET A LOT OF INSIGHT HOW THEY DO THE MISSION. WE UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY DO. THE DATA COMES BACK AND WE CONTINUOUSLY LEARN FROM THAT AND

GO BACK TO MAKE SURE ALL 14 COMPANIES ARE CERTIFIED TO DO THE WORK. >> THEY ARE VERY COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS. WE TALK ABOUT A COMMERCIAL LUNAR ECONOMY AND THAT’S THE END GOAL. HOW DOES THAT SHAPE UP. HOW DO WE GET THERE? >> A FEW DIFFERENT ASPECTS. YOU HEAR US TALKING ABOUT A LUNAR I

CONMY. IN THE SHORT-TERM WHAT THAT MEANS IS ENCOURAGING THE COMPANY TO GET OTHER NONNASA ORGANIZES. IT’S BROADER THAN THAT. OFFERING THE CONTRACT AND BUILD THEIR OWN MISSIONS WE CAN TAKE APART OF. THE COMPANIES DEVELOP THEIR OWN AS A PARTS ECOFEAR ON EARTH. OVER THE YEARS HAD TO FIGURE OUT WAYS.

IN SOME CASES OTHER COMPANIES DO NEW HIGH TECH OPPONENTS. WE CAN SAY NOW WE TALK ABOUT SMALL PAYLOADS GOING TO THE MOON OR HAVING SUPPLIERS ON EARTH. THE BEAL IN THE LONG-TERM IS FOR THE COMPANIES TO TAKE TO THE MOON WORK OR GOODS OR SERVICES OF OTHER COMPANIES THAT

WANTED TO DO WORK IN SPACE. >> WHAT IS THE CONFIDENCE. YOU LAID OUT A VERY AMBITION VISION. >> HAVING THIS BE SUCCESSFUL WITH WHERE WHICH GO OUT TO COMPANIES AND PAY FOR SERVICE TO THE MOON. IT’S SO POSITIVE WE ARE COMMITTED TO EXERCISE THE MODELS. NASA IS A LEARNING ORGANIZE.

WE TRY TO LEARN FROM THAT AND ADJUST THINGS. >> THE FIFTH TECH NOTECHNOLOGY IS THE PHOTO ELECTRON SYSTEM. THEY WILL USE FOUR ANTENNAS AND LO FREQUENCY RECEIVER TO DERM HOW A NEARBY RADIO COULD INTERACT OR INTERFEAR WITH INTERFEARANCE.IT WILL PREFORM MY INCLUDING SOLAR RADIO BURSTS AND DUST IMPACTING THE SURFACE OF THE MOON.

IT SERVES AS A BASELINE. LET’S GET ANOTHER UPDATE FROM JOSH STANDING BY LIVE AT INTUITIVE MACHINES HEAD QUARTERS IN HOUSTON. JOSH. >> HEY, MEGAN. WHEN ASKED WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM LAUNCH VEHICLE SEPARATION ON OR UNTIL AOS. WE’LL BE PATIENTLY WAITING. AFTER FOUR YEARS OF HARD WORK TO GET HERE.

THIS MUST FEEL LIKE AN ETERNITY. LET’S TAKE A LIVE LOOK AT NOVA CONTROL. LOOKING AT LAUNCH AND SIGNAL SHIFT THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THE MISSION SINCE BEFORE WE AWARDED TO TASK ORDER IN 2019. FOLKS STARTED IN THE PAST FEW YEARS POURED THEIR HEARTS INTO THE MISSION. IN FACT, EVERY

THURSDAY THEY HOLD A LUNCH AND LEARN FOR FOLKS TO LEARN ABOUT THE COMPANY. A FEW DAYS AGO BROOKLYN WAS DESCRIBING TODAY’S EVENTS AND SAID THE OPPORTUNITY HAS BEEN A DREAM AND EVERYONE IS PART OF THE BEAUTIFUL MISSION AND INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY. WHILE WE DO HAVE A MOMOMENT BETWEEN. >> THE SIXTH AND

FINAL PAYLOAD HAS 3 TELESCOPES. THEY HAD TO USE A VIEWFINDER OR RELY ON RADAR. >> SO THE ARTEMIS PROGRAM IS TAKING NASA BACK TO THE MOON AND EVERYTHING THAT GOES THERE IN CLUDING THE INSTRUMENTS AND PEOPLE FLOWN THERE SAFELY. SO, THE LANDING PHRASE OF THAT TASK IS ONE OF THE MOST CRITICAL ASPECTS.

IT USES LIGHT IN THE SAME WAY SON NAR SONAR USES SOUND. SIMILAR LIGHT WILL BE REFLECTED BACK. EACH TELESCOPE IS MOUNTED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE TO GET A CLEAR VIEW OF THE GROUND AS IT COMES IN FOR A LANDING. LARGE RADARS OR ASTRONAUTS USING THEIR EYES LOOKING OUT OF THE VIEWPOINT.

THEY LANDED VEHICLES. THEY WILL HAVE TO TAKE THE BURDEN AND OFFTHE CREW WITH A SMALLER LOWER POWER AND MORE ACCURATE INSTRUMENT. >> THROUGHOUT THE BROADCAST WE SHOWED YOU EACH OF THE SIX INSTRUMENTS BOUND FOR THE MOON. TO TALK ABOUT THOSE IS NASA PROJECT SCIENTIST DEBRA. >> GOOD MORNING, BEAUTIFUL LAUNCH. >> BEAUTIFUL LAUNCH.

>> WE HAVE SIX PAYLOADS BOUND FOR THE MOON. IS THERE A COMMON THEME? >> THERE ARE TWO THEMES TO THE PAYLOADS ONBOARD. THE FIRST IS DEMONSTRATING TECHNOLOGIGIES FOR FUTURE SPACECRAFTS TO LAND ON THE SURFACE. THE SECOND IS CHARACTERIZING THE SURFACE OF THE LUNAR SOUTH POLAR REGION THAT’S AN EXTREMELY CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT TO

OPERATE IN AND PREPARING US FOR SENDING HUMANS TO THE SURFACE. >> SO VERY P PRECISE THINGS. >> THE PAYLOAD WORK STARTS BEFORE THEY GET TO THE MOON. WHILE IT’S TRANSITING TOWARDS THE MOON TURN ON THE PAYLOAD TO MAKE SURE THEY SURVIVE THE LAUNCH AND OPERATE AS EXPECTED. IT WILL BE OPERATING

THE ENTIRE TIME ALL THE WAY TOO THE MOON AND DOWN TO THE SURFACE TO MAKE SURE WE COLLECT THE DATA IT NEEDS TO ACHIEVE IT’S MISSION. DURING THIS WE HEARD ABOUT NDL AND THEY WILL BE OPERATING AND COLLECTING DATA AND ONCE ON THE MOON MACHINES WILL TURN ON THE PAID LOAD AND

TAKE TURNS UNTIL THEY ACHIEVE THEIR MISSIONS. >> HOW ARE THEY SELECTED. >> EARLY ON, NASA RETURNED TO THE SEASOCENTERS TO IDENTIFY TECHNOLOGIES THAT WERE MA CHEER IN DESIGNS. WE DID THAT BECAUSE WE WANTED THEM TO BE READY FOR CHRISTIAN THE LANDERS WERE READY TO INTERGRADE. THEY TURNED TO THE VENDORS.

OKAY, YOU PICK FROM THE PAYLOADS WHICH ONE YOU THINK YOU COULD INTERGRADE ON YOUR LANDERS. THEY CHOSE THE PAYLOADS ON THE DELIVERY. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT WE DISCOVER. >> THANK YOU. >> WE’LL STEP ASIDE AND WAIT THE NEXT BIG MILESTONE. THE SECOND BURN OF

THE SECOND STAGE OF THE FALCON NINE ROCKET AND AFTER THAT THE SEPARATION OF INTUITIVE MACHINES LUNAR LANDER FROM THE SECOND STAGE. WE EXPECT THAT TO HAPPEN 20 MINUTES FROM NOW SO WE’LL SEE YOU THEN. ♪ ♪ >>> WELCOME BACK. WE ARE CURRENLY CU CURRENTLY AWAITING THE SECOND BURN. THIS IS AFTER A

JUST A FEW MOMENTS AGO FLIGHT CONTROLLERS HEARD THE LAUNCH VEHICLE SEPARATION. THIS STARTS THE COUNT-DOWN TOWARDS LUNAR LANDER. DURING THE MILESTONE IT’S GOING THROUGH THE STEPS TO POWER ONTO DERM THE POSITION RELATIVE TO THE SOON AND COMMUNICATIONS CONTROLLERS IN NOVA CONTROL. IT’S A PROCESS THAT TAKES SEVERAL MINUTES. APPROXIMATELY 223 KILOMETERS FROM EARTH.

AT LAUNCH VEHICLE SEPARATION A SPRING FORCE GENTLY PUSHES NOVA C. WE JUST SAW THAT. DEPLOY AND DRIFT AWAY FROM THE MOON. BREAK WIRES LET THE LANDER KNOW IT HAS DEPLOYED AND NOVA C STARTS THE TIMER TO COUNT-DOWN FOR WHEN IT’S SAFE TO TURN ON. AFTER THEY FINISHED THE PRIMARY SYSTEMS WILLPOWER ON.

THIS INCLUDES GUIDANCE NAVIGATION OR GNC FOR SHORT. RADIOS, SENSORS, AND THERMAL CONTROL. THE GNC SYSTEM POWERED ON THE COLD GAS HELIUM SYSTEM TO STABILIZE THE VEHICLES ATTITUDE. AT THIS POINT THE LANDER DOESN’T NEED TO KNOW WHERE IT’S POINTED AND STOP THE SPIN MOTION. THIS IS LIKE A PERSON SPINNING IN A

CHAIR WITH CLOSED EYES AND CAN STOP SPINNING WITHOUT KNOWING WHERE THEY ARE POINTING. AFTER CONTROLLING THE SPIN RATE. SPECIAL CAMERAS ANONYMOUSLY MATCH IMAGES AND PROVIDE NOVA C WITH ORIENTATION. THE SOFTWARE TAKES THE MEASUREMENTS AND PROCESSES THEM THROUGH AN ALGORITHM. THE LANDER HAS TWO CRITICAL DATA POINTS. ATTITUDE RELATIVE TO THE STAR FIELD AND

REFERENCE POSITION FROM THE LAUNCH VECTOR. WITH THESE DATA POINTS THE COMMAND REACTION CONTROL SYSTEM TO MANEUVERER THE SOLAR RATE TOWARDS THE SUN AND GENERATING MAXIMUM POWER. ALL OF THE STEPS ARE EXPECTED TO HAPPEN RIGHT NOW AND WHEN COMMISSIONING IS COMPLETE THE NOVA C LANDER WILL MAKE FIRST COMMUNICATION CONTACT KNOWN AS

AQUISITION OF SIGNAL OR AOS. MAKING THIS INVOLVES MORE THAN OPERATIONS IN SPACE AND TAKES CAREFUL COORDINATION HERE ON EARTH AS LUNAR DATA NETWORK.
